Taalmonument
The Taalmonument in the Paarl district of the Western Cape Province, constructed in 1975,
might in a different time have fallen more under Architecture than Landscape Architecture, but
is in modern terms, a Landscape Architectural monument. This awe inspiring monument was
erected on the 100th anniversary of the Genootskap van Afrikaners to celebrate and
commemorate the Afrikaans language. The monument consists of various tapering structures
of a convex and concave nature, and sculpted alcoves, symbolising influences and moulding of
different languages and cultures on the Afrikaans language.
