In the last of our discussions on plants with extraordinary foliage colour, the royal burgundy is
last but most definitely not least! Whether it is the strong lines of Phormium rubra nana in an
ultra-modern setting, or the gentle back drop of Alternantera, planted under Ice Bergs in a
romantic rose garden, burgundy foliage makes an undeniably strong statement.
Burgundy plants combine beautifully with both grey and yellow foliage plant, as discussed in our
previous articles. Play not only with bold colour combinations but also with contrasting foliage
textures for dynamic focal attention. In my own garden I have contrasted the soft grey lacy leaves
of artemesia with the bold rounded leaves of Iresene herbstii against a Duranta Sheenas Gold
topiary with great success.
