For years the only ways to
boast an Iresene herbstii in
your garden was to beg,
borrow or steal a small cutting.
(They root within a week when
placed in a jar of water.) I now
see plants for sale in almost
every nursery visit. It is an easy
grower in both sun and shade.
Cut it back annually to prevent
the plant from becoming
i
leggy. Root the cuttings and

I have recently fallen in love with an
old-timer: the canna! My love not so
much for the iris- like flower, but for
the bold and beautiful leaves- be they
yellow or burgundy! Experiment with
these burgundy beauties to enhance
your tropical garden. Different varieties
are available: Dark green leaves with
burgundy veins, an all burgundy with a
showy red flower and burgundy leaves
with bright pink veins. You have to
keep your hand on a bed of cannas!
Even though the varieties with
coloured foliage tend to bed a little less
aggressive they wil still take over
companion plants if you let them. Cut

tolerate partial shade, but they prefer a
