Step one
Measure the open books you want to cover with
textile and allow for a 5cm overlap all around. Cut
a the paper to make a rectangular template
1
Step Two
Use the paper template to cut the textile to size with
haberdashery scissors. Cut all the templates before
continuing because the next steps are quite messy
2
Step Three
Hold the book only by the pages to keep the cover
free. Apply wood glue or cold glue to all the
surfaces and spread out evenly using a spatula. We
made out own spatula by cutting a square out of an
old plastic ice cream tin lid
3
Step four
Firmly press the book down on the textile by
starting only with the back cover, then rolling it
towards the front cover to get a smooth
application. You can smooth out bubbles with a
moist old cloth.
4
Step Five
Cut the corners at a 45° angle as well as two slits in
line with the spine of the book.
Step six
Tuck the tongue on of the textile into the spine
behind the binding of the book
5
Apply clue on the exposed overlap of the textile,
spread out evenly with a spatula, and fold all the
overlap pieces over. Pull the overlap tightly before
sticking on the inside of the back cover, and smooth
out any bubbles.
6
Step seven
Apply some pressure to the closed book before
letting it dry for 12 hours. You can insert a clean A4
sheet between the cover and the pages to prevent
the pages from sticking to the glued overlap.
