Irene School of Garden Design has subtly divided the introduction workshop course into three topics that all gardeners need: design & drawing, installing and planting, and sustainable and affordable maintenance. The workshop format allows input from various professionals giving insightful help, hints and tips, the essential basics to design your own garden, and crucial gardening information, all in the shortest amount of time possible and at the most affordable price.

The course is presented in a highly informative and enjoyable format, perfect for new homeowners, enthusiasts hobbyists or as the perfect gift to friends or family that love their gardens and is passionate about plants. There is the option to complete the course over 3 Saturdays for those who can’t attend workshops during the week, or 3 consecutive mornings, for people that like things sweet and short or those who have to travel and visit Gauteng to do our workshop in only a few days.

3-Day Course Highlights

The introduction workshop is presented by a variety of industry specialists and lecturers with years of experience in gardening and sharing knowledge, all working together in a unique workshop only available from the Irene School of Garden Design.

Day 1. Measuring, spatial design and drawing

tape measureWhether you just need to revamp a garden bed, breathe new life into a tired design, or start from scratch, this part of the course covers the basics you need before you make long term decisions, before spending unnecessary money on plants and materials. We illustrate just how useful it is to be able to measure, scale, and draw plans. We also show you how to make the most of the process of design, by refining your garden through sketching of ideas and explain the fundamentals of garden design.

We will cover the following topics:

  • Design process
  • Measuring and Triangulating
  • Scale and the basics of plans
  • Drawing techniques and colouring the plan (desktop practical)
  • Site analysis (desktop practical)
  • The separation between layout and décor and why so many gardens are not successful
  • Design principles
  • Styles, themes and concepts
  • Tips on why you should make your garden useful as well as appealing

Day 2. Planting design and décor, planning and installation

During this part of the course, we illustrate just how useful it is to be able to draw elevation drawings for designing plant beds. We also show you how to draw up planting plans, the most essential plan for obtaining quantities and designing with plants. We discuss the fundamentals of planting design, show you the crux of getting stunning plant combinations, and explain the roles and categories of plants in the garden along with planting methods to get the best results.

We will cover the following topics:

  • The role of plants in the garden
  • Using colour in the garden, plants and foliage
  • How to draw up a planting plan
  • How to use a planting plan
  • Determining the quantities of plants
  • Elevations to get a better understanding of how the end result will look (desktop practical)
  • Combining plants and the different types of plant décor. (desktop practical)
  • Plant sizes and planting methods for trees shrubs and groundcovers

Day 3. Maintenance, sustainable gardening, soil, and plant care

This section of the course aims to answer most of the questions that almost every gardener bag with tools will encounter when planting up a new garden or making changes to existing gardens. It also covers some of the basics to successfully test, improve and maintain soils and is perfect to start implementing the process of transferring a design on paper to the garden.
There is no point in designing and installing the perfect garden, without knowing how to take care of it. We believe in creating savings by adopting simple eco-friendly methods and
will help you identify threats and show you how to combat them. We will also discuss the day to day running of your garden to prolong your investment

We will cover the following topics:

  • The installation process
  • The most essential gardening tools and accessories
  • Soil preparation and soil improvement
  • Testing your own soil (practical)
  • Schedules explained for weekly, monthly seasonal and annual tasks
  • Pruning of plants
  • Identifying the most common pests and disease and their cause
  • Eco friendly methods of dealing with pests and disease
