Every now and again people ask what South African Architecture is. Do we have an Architectural identity?
Then Buildings like the Bosjes Chapel appear in our landscape. At first glance it seems Photoshopped into
the surrounding hills, but as you approach you realise that this might just be the most thought provoking
piece of Architecture in South Africa today. It is beautifully nestled against the Witzenberg mountains, and
the journey to the farm on which it stands reveals nothing until one gets out of your car and walk towards
the mountains. It looks breath-taking in any kind of light, revealing different aspects of its form and shape
throughout the day. Designed by Steyn Studio Architects, Bosjes chapel was Inspired by the simplicity of
the Moravian Mission Stations established on Cape Dutch farms in the 19th Century, the chapel lacks a spire
relinquishing a sense of significance in relation to its impressive natural surroundings.
