The Park as well as its name forms such an integral part of the
history of Pretoria. Jan Celliers (1865-1940) was a popular
writer, poet and playwright who lived in the suburbs of
Groenkloof. The streets and Parks of Groenkloof are named
after poets, artists and journalists associated with the early
history of Pretoria. The Park is till this day an inspiration and a
quiet vestige for artists and designers who seek an inspiring
outdoor environment to sketch, practice photography and
write. It is not often that such parks as the Jan Cilliers Park is
in such a well maintained state and that is why Jan Cilliers Park
was chosen as part of the Landscape Architecture curators'
series; to illustrate the importance of preservation and usable
open spaces in modern cities.
